The Marshall Sherfield Fellowship is accepting applications for its 2027 award, with a closing date of 2 November 2026. The programme supports an American scientist or engineer undertaking postdoctoral research at a UK institution.
This opportunity is intended for researchers ready to develop a focused project after doctoral study. It is separate from a taught master’s scholarship and should not be treated as a general funding route for anyone seeking a first postgraduate qualification.
Who can apply and what is offered
The 2027 rules provide for one fellowship lasting twelve to twenty-four months, beginning in October 2027. Applicants must be US citizens and hold a doctorate in a science or engineering subject by the time they take up the award.
Support includes a maintenance allowance, research support paid to the host, approved return travel and limited research-travel funding. Applicants should consult the full rules for residence provisions, eligible costs and host arrangements rather than assume unrestricted support for every expense.
Deadline and recommendations
The application closes on 2 November 2026. Four recommendations are required, with recommenders submitting directly according to the programme’s instructions. The official application page sets out the form and submission route.
Build a project around a clear question
Begin by explaining the problem your research will address and why it is worth studying. A reviewer should be able to identify the central question without searching through several pages of background. Define the intended contribution before describing every technique you might use.
Show how the project builds on your doctoral preparation while developing your independence. This could involve a new method, a different research setting or a question that extends your earlier work. Explain the connection clearly instead of presenting a complete change of subject without supporting preparation.
Choose a suitable host environment
Consider the expertise, facilities and working relationships needed for the project. A strong host match is more specific than the reputation of an institution. Identify what the proposed environment would allow you to do and why those resources are relevant.
Discuss feasibility with the potential host before making firm claims in an application. If access to specialist equipment, data or a particular collaboration is essential, establish what can realistically be arranged. Distinguish an initial conversation from a confirmed commitment.
Explain a realistic research plan
Organise the project into stages with clear outputs. Identify the work that must happen first, the decisions that depend on early results and the points where you would review progress. This can help demonstrate that the proposal fits the available fellowship period.
Include uncertainty in your planning. Research does not always produce the expected result, so describe how you would interpret an unsuccessful approach or adjust a method. A thoughtful alternative is more credible than a promise that every experiment or analysis will succeed.
Prepare a strong record of contribution
Review your CV and research outputs for accuracy. Make your own role in collaborative work understandable, particularly where a publication has many authors. Explain substantial contributions through the questions you addressed, methods you developed or decisions you informed.
Use consistent descriptions of publication status. A manuscript under review should not appear as an accepted paper. If a project is still underway, state what has been completed and what remains, without converting an intended outcome into an established achievement.
Coordinate references and final checks
Ask referees early and give them the exact deadline and submission instructions. Share enough information about the proposal for them to assess your readiness, but leave their evaluation independent. Track whether each required reference has been arranged.
Before submitting, check the form, supporting documents and contact details against the official instructions. Keep a complete copy of your final application. Do not rely on a summary article to resolve a question about residence, eligibility or allowable expenditure.
