Brown University Visiting Scholar Programme 2027
Brown University’s Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Studies welcomes established researchers and practitioners for short visiting appointments. This is an unpaid courtesy affiliation, not a salaried fellowship or scholarship.
Who can apply?
The programme is open to established PhD scholars and human-rights or humanitarian practitioners, including international applicants. Visitors work on their own research and writing. Current graduate students should review Brown’s separate Visiting Research Fellow route.
Visit length and funding
Appointments last from one month to one semester during the academic year. No salary, benefits or other compensation is provided. Applicants must arrange their own funding. Shared office space may be available but is not guaranteed.
Application materials
Prepare a cover letter, research proposal of no more than three pages, CV, details of two referees and a brief endorsement from a regular Brown faculty member. International visitors may need an appropriate exchange-visitor visa.
| Spring 2027 deadline | 1 November 2026 |

| Autumn 2027 deadline | 1 April 2027 |
| Compensation | None |
Before applying
Consider why an in-person visit is necessary for your project. Build a realistic budget and confirm that your proposed dates fit your other commitments. Contact a potential faculty endorser with a concise explanation of your research rather than a generic request. An endorsement is part of the application, not a guarantee of selection.
Frequently asked questions
Is this fully funded?
No. Visitors need independent financial support.
Can practitioners apply?
Yes. The programme includes eligible human-rights and humanitarian practitioners.
