Fellowship Opportunities and Benefits

The 2027 programme offers three broad types of fellowship opportunities.

Seven regular IASC Fellowships will engage early-career researchers in the work of IASC’s scientific working groups.

One IASC Indigenous Fellowship is available for an early-career Arctic Indigenous scholar or knowledge holder.

Two IASC-FPA2 Fellowships, supported by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, comprise one Indigenous Fellowship and one Science Diplomacy Fellowship for an early-career researcher interested in or experienced in science diplomacy.

Research Areas

Fellows can participate in activities connected to the following IASC working groups:

  • Atmosphere: Research concerning the Arctic atmosphere and related scientific questions.
  • Cryosphere: Research focused on ice, snow and frozen environments.
  • Marine: Scientific activities related to Arctic marine systems.
  • Social and Human: Research concerning the human and social dimensions of the Arctic.
  • Terrestrial: Research relating to Arctic land environments and terrestrial systems.

Indigenous fellows will also be invited to participate in the IASC Standing Committee on Indigenous Involvement.

Fellowship Responsibilities

Selected fellows are expected to contribute to scientific activities, help organise working-group activities and support reporting to the IASC Secretariat.

The programme also offers opportunities to build international research networks, collaborate with scientists from different disciplines and gain experience in scientific coordination and management.

During the first fellowship year, fellows receive travel support to attend two consecutive Arctic Science Summit Weeks, where annual working-group meetings take place. Participation beyond the first year is optional and does not include dedicated IASC funding.
