Research Focus and Fellowship Benefits
The fellowship supports research projects that connect the historical values and policy agenda of the Whitlam government with present-day Australian policy challenges.
Research proposals should demonstrate clear strategic relevance to the Whitlam Institute’s public policy and research programme. Applicants are encouraged to explain how their projects could contribute to scholarship, professional practice, public understanding or specific communities.
Eligible Research Themes
Projects may focus on issues related to either or both of the following areas:
Future of Australian Democracy: Research examining democratic institutions, public participation, governance and related contemporary policy challenges.
Australia in the World: Research exploring Australia’s international relationships, role in global affairs and related policy questions.
Projects should also consider the relevance of the Whitlam Prime Ministerial Collection to their research and how findings could increase public knowledge of the institute’s archival resources.
Funding and Fellowship Requirements
Each fellowship provides up to AUD 5,000 to support eligible research expenses. Depending on the project, funding may cover a combination of a stipend, research assistance, conference fees, travel, accommodation and other research support.
Funding is distributed to the successful Fellow’s School or Faculty in two instalments. The first is paid following the signing of the Terms of Agreement, while the second is paid after delivery of a publication-ready Policy Brief, preferably, or an Analysis Paper before the fellowship ends.
Successful Fellows must also contribute to the institute’s research and policy activities, produce a peer-reviewed journal article acknowledging the institute, prepare an opinion piece during the fellowship year and submit a completion report within 30 days of the fellowship end date.
