Overview
UNESCO and the University of Oxford are offering an online course on international standards for freedom of expression and journalist safety. The five-module programme is free and includes a completion certificate.
Who can join?
Learners worldwide may take part. The intended audience includes people working in the judiciary, journalists, academics and students, but interested learners outside those groups can also enrol. Seven language versions are available.
Timing matters
The teaching period runs from 5 October to 9 November 2026. Oxford confirms that late registration remains possible, with registration and completion available through 23 November 2026. New learners should consider the remaining time before enrolling.
What the certificate means
The verified benefit is a course completion certificate. This should not be interpreted as academic credit or as a promise of a separately paid edX verified credential. Check the course’s actual completion requirements within the learning platform.
How to enrol
Read Oxford’s current course announcement and follow the official edX enrolment link. Confirm that registration is available in the chosen language and review the platform’s instructions. This is the freedom-of-expression course, not the different Oxford course concerning artificial intelligence, justice and the rule of law.
