ARUA Opens Paid Early Career Research Fellowships With Up to 42 Positions and US$2,000 Monthly Stipend

The African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) has opened applications for its Early-Career Research Fellowship Programme 2026, offering paid research opportunities for emerging African researchers to conduct globally competitive research projects.

Supported by the Mastercard Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the programme will fund up to 42 early-career researchers to work with ARUA’s Centres of Excellence (CoEs) and Africa-Europe Clusters of Excellence (CoREs).

The fellowship is designed to strengthen research capacity, support young scholars, and provide early-career researchers with opportunities to contribute to impactful research addressing global and African challenges.

About the ARUA Early-Career Research Fellowship Programme

The ARUA Early-Career Research Fellowship Programme provides selected researchers with funding and institutional support to undertake advanced research projects at participating host and affiliated institutions.

Fellows will work within ARUA’s research networks, including:

  • 13 ARUA Centres of Excellence (CoEs)
  • 22 Africa-Europe Clusters of Excellence (CoREs)

The programme aims to promote research excellence, international collaboration, and knowledge development among emerging African academics.

Fellowship Duration

Each fellowship will run for six months.

Option 1

Duration: March 2026 – August 2026

Option 2

Duration: September 2026 – February 2027
