What the free certificate requires
CS50’s certificate guidance describes a free CS50 certificate for learners who meet its completion requirements, including a score of at least 70% on each required problem set, lab and the final project. An edX verified certificate is a separate option. Check the current course instructions for the exact requirements of your course version.
Plan for the work, not just the certificate
Treat the course as a sequence of programming problems. Put regular study sessions into your calendar and leave extra time for debugging. Finishing a video is not the same as completing an assessed task. Keep notes about errors and how you resolved them so that revision becomes more useful.
When you are stuck, reduce the problem to a smaller example and test one assumption at a time. Follow the course’s academic-honesty rules when using help, shared code or AI tools. A certificate is much less useful if you cannot explain the work behind it.
Choose a final project you can demonstrate
Start with a small problem you understand: organising personal study notes, tracking a club’s equipment or exploring a public dataset. Define the minimum useful version before adding features. Document what the project does, how to run it and what remains incomplete.
Use fictional or public data when demonstrating the project. Keep passwords and personal information out of repositories and screenshots.
Make completion useful in applications
On your CV, identify the course and certificate accurately. Link to an appropriate project only when you can explain your own contribution. Neither certificate is a Harvard degree or a guarantee of employment. The strongest outcome is a demonstrable skill you can continue developing.
