The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is hiring a Policy Analyst – Fossil Fuel Transition to support global research, policy analysis, and advocacy on climate change, energy transition, and sustainable development. The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is a globally recognized independent think tank with more than 30 years of experience delivering research, policy advice, and practical solutions to address sustainable development challenges worldwide. With over 300 experts across multiple countries, IISD works with governments, international organizations, civil society, and development partners to promote evidence-based policies that improve environmental, economic, and social outcomes.
The organization is currently recruiting a Policy Analyst – Fossil Fuel Transition within its Energy Program. The successful candidate will join IISD’s International Strategy Team, contributing to research, policy development, and advocacy that supports a Paris Agreement-aligned, just, orderly, and equitable transition away from fossil fuels.
Working alongside a multidisciplinary international team, the Policy Analyst will help countries strengthen climate and development policies, improve energy transition planning, support the implementation of fossil fuel subsidy reforms, and contribute to research on public finance, economic diversification, and sustainable energy systems.
Tasks
The successful candidate will:
- Conduct policy-oriented research on fossil fuel transition and climate policy.
- Support research on public finance and energy transition commitments.
- Analyze climate and energy policies affecting developing countries.
- Produce policy briefs, reports, blogs, visualizations, and communication materials.
- Support advocacy initiatives promoting sustainable energy policies.
- Engage with governments, international organizations, civil society, and strategic partners.
- Present IISD research to policy-makers, partners, and international audiences.
- Contribute to projects supporting countries’ climate and development goals.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across multiple regions.
- Assist with planning stakeholder engagement activities.
Qualifications
Education and Certification
Applicants should possess:
- A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline such as:
- Economics
- Public Finance
- Political Science
- International Development
- Natural Resource Management
- Engineering
- Sociology
- Interdisciplinary Studies
- Other related fields.
Experience
Candidates should have:
- At least 2 years of relevant professional experience.
- Experience in one or more of the following:
- Policy research
- Climate finance
- Energy finance
- International cooperation
- Statistics
- Quantitative and qualitative policy analysis.
- Understanding of climate change and energy transition issues.
- Knowledge of policy-making processes in developed and developing countries.
- Experience working with developing countries is considered an advantage.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Excellent English communication skills.
- Willingness to travel internationally.
Desirable qualifications include:
- Experience with fossil fuel transition policies.
- Experience working with governments.
- Experience collaborating with NGOs and international networks.
