The rule that deserves your attention
Chevening currently requires at least 2,800 hours of work experience gained after completing your undergraduate degree. Its guidance describes this as experience accumulated over a minimum of two years. Full-time work, part-time work, voluntary work and paid or unpaid internships can qualify. Check the current intake’s graduation cutoff separately; reaching the hours total alone does not establish eligibility.
Build a record you can explain
Create a table with the organisation, role, start and end dates, weeks worked and typical hours per week. Add a column identifying whether each period began after your degree completion. Calculate each eligible period as weeks multiplied by weekly hours, then total the periods.
For illustration, 40 weeks at 20 hours per week produces 800 hours. This arithmetic example is not a statement that the experience satisfies every Chevening condition. If your hours varied, record a reasonable, supportable breakdown instead of assigning the highest weekly figure to the whole period.
Check the awkward cases
Look for overlapping positions, study periods and gaps. Keep an explanation of concurrent roles and avoid counting the same work twice.
