UCT RAENS Master’s Bursary 2027–2028: R200,000 a Year for Agroecology Research

The University of Cape Town’s RAENS research opportunity offers a full-time master’s bursary for a candidate interested in agroecology. The application window is short, so eligible applicants should assemble their academic documents promptly.

Key details

Duration January 2027–December 2028
Bursary R200,000 annually; second year subject to progress
Deadline 21 September 2026, 09:00 SAST

Benefits and support

The announcement provides a tax-free bursary, with fees and fieldwork support. Relocation expenses and employment benefits are not included.

Who can apply?

Applicants need a relevant honours degree with at least 65%, awarded within the past five years, and must not already hold a research master’s degree. Fieldwork involves extended stays in rural South Africa. Preference is given to South Africans from historically excluded groups. A driving licence and an additional South African language are desirable.

How to apply

Email a motivation letter, CV, transcripts and two referees’ details to Fahdelah.Hartley@uct.ac.za. The bursary notice distinguishes this deadline from UCT’s 30 September admission deadline and advises waiting for the bursary outcome before applying for admission.

Preparing a focused application

Use the motivation letter to connect a concrete research interest with the practical demands of fieldwork. Explain any experience collecting data, working with communities or analysing environmental and social questions. If this would be your first field-based project, describe relevant transferable experience honestly. Ask referees in advance whether they can comment on your research readiness. Keep the bursary and admission dates as separate entries in your calendar; one submission does not automatically complete the other.

Frequently asked question

Is funding for the second year automatic?

No. Renewal depends on satisfactory academic progress.
