The Internet Society has opened the training pathway leading to its 2027 fellowship. Selected fellows receive mentoring, support to attend a relevant Internet event and a project stipend of up to US$5,000, subject to budget approval.
Two deadlines to understand
- Before 22 November 2026: Complete the required pre-fellowship training.
- 18 December 2026: Final deadline for eligible participants to submit the fellowship application.
Completing training makes you eligible to apply; it does not guarantee selection or funding. The ten-month fellowship is scheduled to begin on 22 February 2027.
Programme focus
Tracks cover Internet Policy and Mobilization, Internet Connectivity, and Internet Safety and Security. Fellows develop practical projects addressing Internet challenges in their communities.
Commitment and eligibility
The programme lists English proficiency, reliable Internet access, suitable equipment, a valid passport and at least four hours of weekly availability. People currently participating in a 2026 Internet Society fellowship cannot apply.
The official FAQ estimates approximately 30 hours for pre-fellowship training, excluding project development. Participants select one track and sub-track per cycle. The fellowship is competitive, with proposed-project quality, feasibility and potential impact informing selection.
Prepare a realistic project
Opportunities Feed planning guidance: Before enrolling, reserve time for both coursework and project thinking. A training deadline is easy to misread as an application deadline; track them separately and leave room to receive and complete the application.
Keep the project understandable to someone outside your speciality. Explain who faces the problem, what you intend to produce and how you would know the work helped. Do not assume the maximum funding will be approved; distinguish essential costs from optional additions.
Follow the programme’s rules on AI-assisted applications. Use your own experience and judgement, and never invent community partnerships, previous results or qualifications to strengthen a proposal.
