ETH Zurich Excellence Scholarships 2027 Offer CHF13,500 Per Semester and Tuition Waivers — Applications Open 1 November

ETH Zurich has confirmed the next application window for its Excellence Scholarship & Opportunity Programme, known as ESOP. Students planning to begin an eligible master’s programme in autumn 2027 can prepare for applications from 1 to 30 November 2026.

The scholarship combines financial support with mentorship and access to the ETH Foundation network. It is a competitive opportunity for academically strong applicants who can explain both their preparation for advanced study and the direction they want their research to take.

Funding and eligibility

From autumn 2027, ESOP provides CHF13,500 per semester for living and study expenses, together with a tuition fee waiver. Awards cover the regular master’s duration of three or four semesters.

ETH expects results within the top ten per cent of the bachelor’s programme. Applicants who already hold a master’s degree, or are currently enrolled in a master’s programme at ETH Zurich, are ineligible. Approximately sixty scholarships are planned for the 2027–2028 academic year, subject to available funding.

Application documents and timing

Apply through the online master’s application during the November window. Alongside admission documents, applicants need an independently developed thesis pre-proposal. Where the degree programme does not already request references, two professors must be named as referees.

The official page contains differing time-of-day references for the closing date. Submit well before 30 November and follow the deadline displayed in the application system. This September article is preparation coverage: applications are scheduled to open on 1 November.

Start with academic fit

Before drafting a scholarship statement, examine the master’s programme itself. Compare its subject requirements with your transcript and identify the courses or projects that have prepared you for advanced study. Funding is valuable only if the academic programme is a suitable next step.

Build a short evidence list linking your strongest work to your intended field. This might include a substantial final-year project, a rigorous methods course or research experience. Describe what you learned and what questions remain, rather than relying entirely on grades or general enthusiasm.

Develop a clear research direction

A useful pre-proposal starts with a focused question. Explain why the question matters, what is already known and what your proposed work might contribute. Keep the scope realistic for a master’s project and distinguish a possible approach from a guaranteed result.

Read relevant academic literature and keep careful notes on where ideas come from. Your writing should make the relationship between existing research and your own proposal clear. Do not copy a successful proposal or present another person’s reasoning as your independent work.

If you use writing or research tools, review their output critically. Check citations against the original publications, verify that sources exist and ensure you can explain the methods you propose. The final document should reflect your own understanding and meet the university’s application rules.

Give referees useful context

Choose academics who know your work sufficiently well to give specific examples. Ask in good time and provide your CV, programme choice and a short explanation of your proposed direction. Confirm the submission process with them once the application system issues its instructions.

A detailed account of your work can be more useful than a recommendation based only on a prestigious name. Help your referees remember the project, course or research activity through which they observed your abilities, while leaving the content of their assessment entirely to them.

Plan a complete application

Create a checklist for transcripts, translations where required, references and programme-specific materials. Use consistent names and dates across documents. Review the form after uploading files to confirm that each attachment is readable and belongs in the correct field.

Keep alternative study and funding plans while awaiting a competitive decision. Do not make irreversible travel or accommodation commitments on the assumption that an application guarantees an award.
