Learning guide updated 1 October 2026. The Open University’s OpenLearn platform offers free courses across a wide range of subjects. Completing an enrolled course can earn a downloadable Statement of Participation. Some courses also award a digital badge.
What the statement represents
A Statement of Participation records completion of an OpenLearn course. It does not carry formal credit toward a qualification and should not be presented as an Open University degree or professional licence. A badge is also evidence of a specific learning achievement, not a guarantee of employment.
How to earn and download it
The OpenLearn FAQ explains that learners must enrol, read the introduction and guidance, work through every page and submit the required quizzes. Stay signed in so progress is recorded. After completion, the statement becomes available as a PDF in the Achievements section of your profile; the notification may take up to 24 hours.
If progress is incomplete, check the activity record for missing pages or tasks rather than assuming that viewing the final page completes the course.
Choose a course that fits your goal
Decide what you want to understand or practise before selecting a course. Review its level, estimated study time and learning outcomes. A short introduction can help you explore a new subject; a longer course may be more suitable when you already know the basics.
Plan a manageable study schedule. After each section, write a short explanation in your own words and note a practical example. This can help you identify gaps in understanding before moving on. These are study suggestions, not additional requirements imposed by OpenLearn.
Using the achievement on your CV
List the exact course title and describe it accurately as OpenLearn study. Where useful, add a brief example of how you applied the learning. Avoid broad claims such as being professionally certified in an entire field after completing a short introductory course.
Where to start
Browse the official OpenLearn course catalogue. Read the OpenLearn FAQ for enrolment, progress tracking, badges and statements. This is an ongoing learning platform, not a single scholarship competition with one application deadline.
