IBM SkillsBuild Offers Free Technology Training and IBM-Branded Digital Credentials

Learning guide updated 1 October 2026. IBM SkillsBuild offers free online learning in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data and cloud computing. It is a training platform, not a paid internship, scholarship or promise of employment at IBM.

What is available?

The platform provides separate routes for adult learners, university communities and high-school learners. Course and pathway pages explain their intended audience, language, duration and prerequisites. Select a route that matches your circumstances rather than assuming every advanced experience is available to every account.

How the digital credentials work

Eligible learning activities can lead to IBM-branded digital credentials. Completing any page or watching a single video does not automatically earn a badge: follow the requirements attached to the particular credential. IBM explains that learners complete a qualifying activity, accept the issued credential through Credly and can then share it online.

A digital badge records a specific learning achievement. Do not describe it on your CV as a university degree, professional licence or separate IBM certification unless that is the exact award you earned.

Choose a course with a useful outcome

Start with one skill gap rather than enrolling in many unrelated courses. For example, someone exploring data work could plan a small analysis that explains a question, cleans a dataset and presents a clear conclusion. A cybersecurity beginner could write a simple risk assessment for a fictional organisation. These are suggested practice activities, not additional IBM award requirements.

Allow time to practise after completing the lessons. Keep notes on the tools you used, decisions you made and limitations you found. That makes it easier to discuss the learning in an interview without overstating your experience.

How to start

  1. Visit the official IBM SkillsBuild website and choose the appropriate learner route.
  2. Review the course description and any entry conditions before registering.
  3. If a badge is your goal, check the digital-credential requirements before starting.
  4. Complete the required work and retain the official credential link when awarded.

Is there an application deadline?

This guide concerns the learning platform, not a single timed recruitment round. Scheduled events, challenges and partner-supported programmes may have their own dates and access rules. Check those individually.
