Course guide updated 3 October 2026. Harvard’s CS50 Introduction to Artificial Intelligence with Python is available free through its OpenCourseWare website, including to people who are not Harvard students. This refreshed guide focuses on that specific course.
| Format | Online, self-paced; seven weeks of material |
|---|---|
| Preparation | CS50x or at least one year of Python experience |
| Topics | Search, knowledge, uncertainty, optimisation, learning, neural networks and language |
| Learning access | Free OpenCourseWare route |
Free learning and certificates are different
The CS50 certificate page offers a free CS50 Certificate to learners who submit and score at least 70% on each project. This is distinct from the optional verified certificate through edX.
Harvard Online currently lists the verified certificate at US$299. It costs extra and is not required to access the free OpenCourseWare materials. Check the live enrolment page before paying, as prices and platform conditions can change.
How to begin
Start at the official CS50 AI course website, read the prerequisites, then work through lectures and projects. Follow the course’s submission instructions and academic-honesty rules. An edX account is used for project submission and feedback.
Plan for practical programming
Our study advice is to reserve time for implementation, not just watching lectures. Before starting a project, explain the problem in ordinary language and identify what counts as a correct output. Write down a small test case you can work through manually; this gives you a useful reference when your program behaves unexpectedly.
Keep a learning log of errors and fixes. Record what failed, which assumption was wrong and how you verified the correction. When comparing algorithms, consider both the result and the resources needed to produce it. A model that performs well on one example may still fail on different inputs.
If the prerequisites feel difficult, strengthen Python fundamentals before rushing through AI exercises. Practise functions, data structures, debugging and reading unfamiliar code. There is no advantage in collecting completion claims for work you cannot explain independently.
Describe the achievement accurately
On your CV, use the exact course and certificate name you earned. This online course is not admission to a Harvard degree programme. Describe a specific concept you learned or an original project you later built, without publishing assessed solutions contrary to course rules. Useful evidence of understanding matters more than overstating the credential.
