What the programme offers
Participants join as economists, not interns. Assignments can involve country analysis, economic policy, research and capacity development. The rotations provide exposure to different departments and policy questions. Strong performers who complete the programme are typically considered for continued economist careers through departmental vacancies; permanent employment is not guaranteed.
Who can apply?
The 2027 recruitment notice seeks recent PhD graduates, or candidates within one year of completing a PhD in macroeconomics or a related field. Applicants must be citizens of an IMF member country and under 34 when the programme starts in September 2027. Excellent English, strong analytical and quantitative skills, and a firm understanding of macroeconomics are important. Applicants from other economics specialisms can be considered when they have the required macroeconomic foundation.
How selection works
The IMF programme guide describes a preliminary interview followed by submission of a research paper, transcript and three academic references. Later stages include a panel interview and written assessment. The process assesses analysis, judgement, communication and the ability to connect economic research with practical policy problems.
How to apply
Read the official Economist Program 2027 vacancy and apply through the IMF recruitment portal. Check the live notice for submission instructions, required attachments and any updates before sending your application. Do not confuse this three-year programme with the separate Fund Internship Program.
Prepare a stronger application
Our application advice: prepare a short explanation of your main research question, methods and findings, then explain why the result matters for policy. Be ready to discuss limitations rather than overstating what your evidence proves. Map your CV to concrete examples of quantitative analysis, clear writing and collaboration.
Contact potential referees early and allow time to check document formats. Submit before the final day so that technical problems do not prevent completion. Keep a copy of your application and confirmation message.
