Programme guide, checked 4 October 2026. The IMF Research Analyst Program offers two years of experience supporting operational and policy work. Recruitment depends on available positions; this guide does not announce a single open intake or deadline.
Experience and eligibility
Participants develop quantitative and qualitative analysis, research and technology skills. Positions are based at IMF headquarters in Washington, DC, with recruitment open across geographic regions.
The official programme guidance targets recent bachelor’s graduates in economics, computer science, statistics, mathematics or business administration. Applicants with advanced degrees may be considered where their combined professional experience is limited.
The stated academic threshold is a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 both overall and in the principal subject. Final transcripts must verify this before appointment. Check the individual vacancy for additional conditions and how your qualifications will be assessed.
How recruitment works
Vacancies appear periodically in IMF Workday. Follow the official programme page to current Research Analyst vacancies; distinguish programme places from other analyst roles with different eligibility.
Read the official Research Analyst Program guidance and vacancy links.
Preparing your evidence
Create a short inventory of projects involving data collection, cleaning, analysis or written interpretation. For each, record the question, the tool used and the result. Describe your own contribution accurately, including the limits of the evidence.
A strong example does not have to come from paid employment. Coursework or a personal project can show careful reasoning if you explain it clearly and avoid presenting it as professional experience. Check permissions before sharing any dataset, code or report produced for another organisation.
Keep academic records ready, but submit only what the live vacancy requests. If your university uses a different grading scale, ask the recruiting team how to document it rather than inventing a conversion. These are editorial preparation suggestions, not extra selection rules.
