Scholarship Benefits and Funding

The University of Twente Scholarship provides financial support to excellent international students pursuing eligible master’s programmes.

Financial Support

Recipients can receive between €3,000 and €22,000 for one year. The scholarship is intended to compensate for study-related costs, and the recipient decides how to spend the award.

The university does not pay tuition fees or other expenses directly on the student’s behalf. Applicants should therefore calculate the total cost of studying and living in the Netherlands and ensure they can cover any remaining expenses.

Funding for Two-Year Master’s Programmes

Students enrolled in eligible two-year master’s programmes may receive an additional UTS award for their second year, equal to the amount received in the first year.

Continuation is conditional. Students must achieve:

  • An average grade of at least 7 out of 10 by the end of the third quartile of the first academic year.
  • At least 50% of European Credits by the end of the third quartile of the first academic year.
  • Compliance with the scholarship’s applicable progression requirements.

The additional award is not automatic and depends on meeting the conditions.

Potential Additional Kipaji Scholarship

Students starting a master’s programme in September 2027 may also be eligible for consideration for the Kipaji Scholarship.

Applicants must apply for the UTS to be considered for the Kipaji Scholarship. Those interested and eligible should indicate their interest in their scholarship application motivation. The Kipaji Scholarship has additional eligibility requirements, which candidates should review separately.

Qualifications and Eligibility

Applicants must meet the university’s stated eligibility requirements.

Academic Requirements

Candidates must have been provisionally or conditionally admitted to an eligible University of Twente master’s programme for the 2027/2028 academic year, beginning in September 2027.

Applicants must also have a University of Twente student number and must not have graduated from a previous University of Twente undergraduate or graduate programme.

English Language Requirements

Applicants must meet the university’s stated academic English requirements:

  • Academic IELTS score of at least 6.5 overall, including a speaking subscore of at least 6.0; or
  • TOEFL iBT score of at least 90 overall, including a speaking subscore of at least 20.

Candidates should verify accepted tests and current requirements with the university before applying.

Other Eligibility Conditions

Applicants must also:

  • Be from outside the EU/EEA and meet the scholarship’s nationality and residency-related conditions.
  • Meet the Netherlands’ entry visa requirements, where applicable.
  • Not be eligible for a Dutch study loan.
  • Not be eligible for the Dutch statutory tuition fee under the university’s stated rules.

The scholarship is not available to Dutch students, current University of Twente students, EU/EEA students, pre-master’s students or applicants to master’s programmes at the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC).

Non-EU/EEA students who qualify for the statutory tuition fee because of their Dutch residence status are also excluded.
