Programme and next-round planning guide. OIST’s spring 2027 internship deadline passed on 15 October 2026. The official schedule lists 15 April 2027, 23:59 JST for the fall round. This guide does not confirm that the next application window is already open.

Research and funding

The OIST Research Internship programme offers four-to-six-month laboratory placements in STEM subjects. Selection depends on research fit, academic background, host-unit space and funding.

Published support includes ¥2,400 per working day, furnished accommodation, one direct return air ticket and a shuttle-bus pass. Administrative help includes visa-related Certificate of Eligibility procedures. These benefits apply to the intern, not family members.

Who should prepare?

Eligible applicants include students in the final two bachelor’s years, master’s students and bachelor’s/master’s graduates. Enrolled students need home-institution approval. Current or former PhD students are not eligible.

Prepare transcripts, qualification/enrolment evidence, a short purpose statement, CV, identification and faculty recommendations. At least one recommendation must arrive before submission.

Costs and language

The application fee is ¥5,000, non-refundable. IELTS/TOEFL scores are optional for this internship application, not a promise of exemption for other OIST programmes.

Consult the official schedule, documents and application access before paying. The published fall placement period is October 2027–March 2028; dates are tentative.
