EPFL Master’s Excellence Fellowships: Application Requirements and the 15 December Funding Deadline Explained

EPFL’s Master’s Excellence Fellowships offer financial support to selected students pursuing advanced study in Lausanne, Switzerland. For external candidates, the university’s published funding deadline is 15 December, making early preparation important for prospective 2027 entrants.

The fellowship is competitive and tied to a master’s application. Readers should distinguish admission to a programme from selection for funding: receiving an academic offer does not by itself establish that a fellowship has been awarded.

What the fellowship provides

EPFL lists CHF10,000 per semester, for up to four semesters. External recipients also receive a student-room reservation. Students remain responsible for tuition, rent and other living costs; the room reservation should not be described as free accommodation.

Application route and eligibility

External applicants request consideration within the online master’s application. It must be paid for and validated by 15 December. Reference letters follow within the additional period specified in the confirmation email. No extra scholarship documents are required beyond the admission materials.

Applicants who already hold a master’s degree or are currently enrolled in an EPFL master’s programme are ineligible. Internal applicants continuing in the same field have a separate 31 January process; those changing fields follow the published December route. Renewal depends on academic performance.

Choose the right academic programme

Start by reading the admission requirements for your intended subject. Compare prerequisite knowledge with your previous coursework and identify any gaps. A fellowship application is strongest when the degree itself is a logical continuation of your academic preparation and interests.

Make a shortlist of the topics you want to study more deeply. Then connect each one to a course, project or research experience you have already completed. This exercise helps turn a broad statement about studying abroad into a clear account of why the particular programme suits you.

Use evidence in your motivation statement

Explain what you have done, what you learned and how it shaped your next academic goal. A specific account of investigating a problem can carry more weight than a general claim that you have always been passionate about a subject.

For a substantial project, describe the question, your approach and the limits of the result. If the work involved a team, identify your own responsibilities. Avoid overstating preliminary findings or presenting an unfinished activity as a completed achievement.

Prepare references before the deadline

Ask potential referees early and confirm that they can meet the submission timetable. Provide a concise CV and remind them of the work through which they know you. Once the application system sends instructions, make sure they have received the relevant message.

Keep a record of which documents are complete and which depend on another person. References, certified records and translations can take longer than writing the application itself. Allow time for a missing document or technical problem without relying on a last-minute extension.

Understand the financial commitment

Create a realistic study budget using current university information and your own circumstances. Separate recurring costs from one-time expenses such as travel or a housing deposit. Treat a potential fellowship as unconfirmed until you receive a formal award.

Check conditions on combining funding and report other support accurately when requested. A scholarship comparison should consider both the amount and the expenses it must cover. A larger headline figure does not automatically mean that every cost of studying overseas is paid.

Review the final submission

Check names, dates, programme choice and attachment quality before validating the application. Open each uploaded file to ensure it is readable and complete. A clear filename can also help you avoid submitting an old draft or a document intended for another university.

Save confirmation messages and follow the university’s instructions for any later requests. The preparation suggestions in this guide are Opportunities Feed editorial advice, not additional EPFL assessment criteria. Programme and funding rules should always be checked on the official page.
