Applications checked 3 October 2026. The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans are accepting applications for the 2027 cohort. The deadline is 29 October 2026 at 2 p.m. Eastern Time, including recommendations. Funding begins in autumn 2027.
What the funding covers
The official financial-support guide describes up to US$90,000 across two academic years: up to $25,000 annually in stipend support and $20,000 annually toward tuition. Tuition support covers at most 50% of tuition and fees and is paid to the university. Other awards can affect the final package; $90,000 is a maximum, not an automatic cash payment to every fellow.
Who should check eligibility?
This fellowship is for qualifying immigrants and children of immigrants pursuing full-time graduate or professional study in the United States. Applicants must meet the programme’s detailed New American definition, be no older than 30 at the deadline and satisfy academic-stage requirements for 2027–2028.
Nationality or a general interest in studying abroad is not enough. The official eligibility rules explain the accepted immigration and parental-background categories, exceptions, degree timing and restrictions for students already advanced in a programme. Check those rules against your exact circumstances rather than relying on a simplified “international scholarship” label.
Documents and selection timetable
The application process requires an online application, CV or résumé, transcripts, two essays and three to five recommendations. Relevant admission-test scores are requested where applicable. Each essay has a 1,000-word limit.
The organisers expect finalist notifications in January 2027, interviews in late January/early February and selection notifications in March. All required materials must reach the online system by the deadline; registering a recommender is not the same as receiving their letter.
Prepare a focused application
Our advice is to plan the two essays as complementary pieces. One should explain the context of your New American experience; the other should connect your current work, chosen graduate study and near-term goals. Avoid repeating the same achievement list in both.
Use specific episodes and decisions rather than broad claims about resilience or leadership. Explain what changed, what you did and why it matters to the direction you now want to take. Your account should remain accurate and in your own voice.
Ask recommenders early and provide a concise reminder of work they directly observed. Give them the deadline and relevant programme information, but do not manufacture praise or write claims they cannot independently support.
Before submission
Check that uploaded documents are readable, names and degree dates agree, and recommendation statuses show receipt. Keep your graduate-school applications on their own schedules: a fellowship application does not replace admission to a degree programme.
