Overview

The Folger Shakespeare Library’s long-term Public Humanities Fellowships provide US$70,000 for nine months. The programme supports work that connects its collections with public engagement around the early modern world, approximately 1400–1800, and its continuing legacies.

Who can apply?

Applicants can include researchers, artists, writers, doctoral candidates, community leaders and other knowledge holders. A terminal degree is not mandatory. The proposed project must use Folger collections and develop a public-humanities component.

Residence and award

Fellows spend at least six months in Washington, DC; up to three months may be completed virtually. The US$70,000 award is intended to meet travel, housing and living costs. It is not US$70,000 plus separate guaranteed coverage of those expenses.

Application process

Read the Public Humanities Fellowship guidance, then register or sign in through the official fellowship application portal. Follow the current project and supporting-material requirements shown by the organiser. This opportunity is distinct from the Folger’s Artistic Research Fellowship.

Deadline

Applications for the 2027–28 call close on 15 December 2026 at 23:59 ET. Check the residential commitment and your project’s use of the collections before investing time in an application.
