German Missions Micro-Projects Fund Offers Up to €25,000 for Community Initiatives

Registered civil society organisations in South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini can apply to the German Missions’ 2027 micro-project scheme. The current call offers support of up to €25,000 per project, with applications due by November 30, 2026.

This is a geographically defined community-development opportunity. Organisations elsewhere should not assume that the same funding ceiling, deadline or rules apply to their local German embassy.

What the current call supports

The official 2027 announcement focuses on poverty reduction and improvements for marginalised communities. Priorities include a just energy transition, alternative livelihoods, women’s rights, equal access to education and healthcare, and anti-discrimination. Projects in Mpumalanga and Limpopo receive enhanced consideration.

Applicants must contribute money or labour. Projects must be completed within the calendar year of their grant agreement, and already-started projects cannot receive funding. The scheme excludes private business startups and recurring expenses such as running costs.

Make the project manageable

The central planning question is whether the proposed activity can operate sustainably after the grant ends. A community asset may require maintenance, consumables or someone responsible for day-to-day oversight. Explain how those needs would be met without assuming further embassy funding.

Keep the project boundary clear. Identify the group benefiting, the activity being funded and the result the organisation expects to achieve. A focused proposal with a realistic implementation plan is easier to assess than several loosely connected activities competing for the same budget.

Build a timetable backwards from completion. Allow room for procurement, delivery delays and checking the finished work. Distinguish preparatory planning from starting the funded project, and consult the mission if the status of an existing activity is unclear.

Test whether the budget is complete

The following is an independent preparation method, not an additional mission rule. For each budget line, record the item, quantity, unit price, total, supplier and quotation date. Use a separate column for the organisation’s own contribution. This makes it easier to distinguish the amount requested from the total cost of delivering the project.

For example, a hypothetical training-room improvement might need equipment, installation and secure storage. A quotation covering equipment alone would not show the full delivery cost. Check what the supplier includes before choosing the lowest figure. Keep the grant request within eligible costs and identify a credible source for any expenses the scheme does not cover.

Then ask someone who did not write the proposal to follow the numbers from the activity plan to the budget. Can they see which purchases produce each result? Do dates and quantities match? Resolve inconsistent totals before submission, and preserve the working version so later revisions can be explained. Assign one person to check supplier contact details and another to compare the final attachments against the budget, reducing the chance of outdated quotations being submitted.

Prepare the supporting evidence

The guidelines linked from the current call require an official form signed by two responsible people, registration documentation, a project budget and three independent quotations for required materials and services. Additional evidence can include land rights and safeguarding documentation for projects involving children.

Compare quotations on a like-for-like basis. Check that quantities, delivery arrangements and specifications match the proposed work. If a quote leaves out an essential cost, flag it before finalising the budget rather than discovering a funding gap during implementation.

Where to send the application

Submit by 30 November 2026 to microprojects@pret.diplo.de, or ez-s@kaps.diplo.de for Cape-region organisations or projects. The official page specifies the email subject and full checklist.

Use the mission’s linked forms even where filenames show an earlier year. The guidelines explain site visits, contracts and reporting. As a practical precaution, keep a dated submission copy, an index of attachments and a named contact who can answer questions about the proposal.
