Monthly grants and duration
The ECB programme page lists €1,170 monthly. The €2,120 rate applies only after at least two years of PhD study and where the vacancy requires that qualification. Contracts normally last three to six months, with one possible extension up to twelve months total. Accommodation support is conditional on temporary relocation from more than 50 km away. A traineeship does not automatically lead to employment.
General eligibility
Candidates must be 18 or older, nationals of an EU member or acceding country, and hold at least a bachelor’s degree. The general page specifies English and another official EU language; check the precise proficiency levels in the vacancy.
Following their latest qualification, candidates should have no more than twelve months of professional experience or six months as a trainee, and must not have previously worked or trained at the ECB.
Find and check an individual vacancy
Use the ECB’s official online recruitment system. For example, the official listing for Forecasting and Policy Modelling, vacancy 15066, shows a 20 October 2026 closing date in the current search listing. The detailed page could not be retrieved during this check, so applicants must confirm its live status and full requirements before applying. This example is not a deadline for every ECB traineeship.
Build a role-specific application
Our advice is to make a short evidence table before writing. Put each essential requirement in the left column and a concrete example from your education or work in the right column. A gap in essential eligibility is different from an area where you could improve through preparation; do not blur the distinction.
For an analytical role, explain a dataset you used, the problem you investigated and how you checked your results. For operational work, describe how you kept records accurate, communicated a problem or met a deadline. Use examples you can discuss confidently rather than copying impressive terminology from the advert.
Final checks
Record the vacancy number, closing date, location, language levels and requested documents. Check your availability against the proposed placement period before submitting. Keep your email address current, retain the confirmation and review any interview instructions carefully. A reserve-list outcome should not be treated as a confirmed placement when making accommodation or travel commitments.
