What the arrangement actually offers
Online volunteers must be at least 18. Assignments are remote and can involve up to 20 hours per week for a maximum of 12 weeks. They carry no salary, living allowance or other financial benefits. Volunteers are not UN staff, and participation does not establish employment with the UN. Host organisations issue an electronic certificate of appreciation after successful completion.
Choose a deliverable you can complete
Start with the assignment’s output: translation, research, design, data work or another defined contribution. Check that your skills match and that the time commitment fits around paid work or study. A short, clear assignment is often easier to assess than an appealing title with vague responsibilities.
Before accepting, clarify how success will be judged, who gives feedback and which tools are needed. Ask how the organisation handles sensitive information. Do not upload beneficiary records or internal documents into public portfolios.
Describe the experience accurately
Keep a private record of tasks, dates and approved outputs. On your CV, use an accurate label such as online volunteer and identify the host organisation. Explain your contribution instead of presenting the assignment as UN employment. Ask permission before sharing work samples.
A simple decision rule
Apply when the cause matters to you, the task is clear and the unpaid hours are affordable. If your immediate priority is income, keep paid applications moving alongside volunteering.
