Eligibility and deadline differences
The programme targets researchers within the five-year period following their doctorate. Applicants completing their doctorate should check EUI’s precise submission and defence rules. Awards can run for one or two years depending on the academic unit and offer.
Economics follows a separate extended timetable: after the main deadline, its application form reopens following a one-week interruption and remains available until 1 March 2027 at 14:00 CET. Applicants in other fields should use the October deadline.
Prepare a focused proposal
EUI’s guidance limits the research proposal itself to two pages and expects a strong command of English. Applicants should consult faculty profiles to identify possible mentors, but should not contact faculty for individual proposal guidance or potential mentorship.
Use the proposal’s limited space to establish a clear question, explain how you will answer it and show what is feasible during the fellowship. A long list of interests can make it harder for a reviewer to understand the contribution you intend to make.
Map each planned output to the time and resources required. If your project depends on archive access, interviews or data permissions, explain how that dependency will be handled rather than treating it as already secured.
Before submitting
Give referees sufficient time and check the full document requirements for your academic unit. Separate the fellowship’s research fit from its financial fit: review the award conditions and your relocation budget before making commitments.
