Applications open: checked 4 October 2026. The Mo Ibrahim Foundation’s 2027 Leadership Fellowships combine a $100,000 stipend with a year of work and mentorship in the executive offices of major international institutions. The application deadline is 20 November 2026.
What the fellowship offers
Three fellows are selected for 12-month placements at the African Development Bank, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and the International Trade Centre. Fellows contribute to research and policy work while learning from senior institutional leadership.
The placements are based in Abidjan, Addis Ababa and Geneva respectively. The programme also connects fellows with its alumni community and the Foundation’s Now Generation Network. This is a professional leadership fellowship, not an entry-level internship or a scholarship for a new degree.
Who is eligible?
- African nationality.
- A master’s degree.
- At least seven years of relevant professional experience.
- Under 40, or under 45 for women with children, subject to the applicable host’s stated conditions.
Each host sets additional requirements. Read the particular vacancy before deciding whether your experience fits; the headline benefits alone do not establish eligibility.
How to apply and required documents
Use the Foundation’s fellowship page to access the separate host application links. Follow the chosen host’s instructions for documents and submission. Do not assume that one application automatically covers all three institutions.

Preparing your leadership evidence
Start with a short list of decisions you helped make, teams you supported and problems you solved. Select examples that demonstrate your own responsibility rather than relying on the reputation of your employer. Describe the situation, your contribution and the outcome, and distinguish measured results from estimates.
Tailor your statement to the host’s work. A generic paragraph about wanting international exposure is less useful than a clear explanation of the policy or institutional problem you are equipped to help address. Keep confidential employer information out of your application unless you have permission to disclose it.
These are editorial preparation suggestions, not additional official requirements. Leave time to obtain the supporting records requested by your selected institution.
