The 2027 Sir Jules Thorn Award for Biomedical Research is open for institution-selected preliminary applications.
Funding
The award offers up to £2 million for a five-year translational biomedical research programme. It does not cover the principal applicant’s salary or host overheads.
Eligibility and institutional selection
UK universities and NHS organisations may nominate one proposal, coordinating selection across affiliated institutions. Research must involve patients and take place in the UK. The lead should be in the early years of an established independent research career and commit at least half their time. Already established professors and substantially funded ongoing programmes are not the intended recipients. The institution must support the lead’s post.
Prepare the preliminary application
The live form requests a research summary explaining the translational approach, clinical timescale and unmet need; a 250-word abstract; proposed cost; and statements on eligibility, time commitment and research impact. Upload key references, a short CV with publications and grant information, and institutional endorsement explaining proposal selection. The combined CV/publication/grant list must not exceed three pages. An optional single-page figure appendix is allowed.
Deadline
Preliminary applications close at noon on 21 December 2026. The public page does not label the timezone; confirm timing with the Trust if needed. Full proposals follow by invitation.
